South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) has been recognised as national leader in walking, wheeling and cycling.
South Yorkshire has been recognised as one of the top-performing regions in the country for walking, wheeling and cycling, after being awarded Level 3 status in Active Travel England’s latest capability ratings.
Reportedly, SYMCA is now well placed to benefit from future support for walking, wheeling and cycling projects in the region.
This could unlock nearly £17m of further funding from SYMCA’s Integrated Settlement from the UK government.
The announcement comes as South Yorkshire continues to collectively build on a strong foundation of projects designed to improve journeys and give people more choice in how they travel.
This includes more than 88 kilometres of new routes, over 250 new or better crossings.
South Yorkshire’s active lives commissioner, Ed Clancy OBE, said: “I’ve spoken to hundreds of people who want what I wanted as a kid – the freedom to walk to school, ride a bike and play outside safely. That shouldn’t be too much to ask. This Level 3 rating proves we’re on the right track.
“Our focus now is creating safer neighbourhoods and routes to opportunity, so everyone – regardless of age, ability or income – can choose to walk, wheel or cycle.
“Thanks to the hard work of our local partners, we’re building a South Yorkshire where every journey starts with confidence and ends in opportunity.”
