The UK Department for Transport (DfT) has unveiled a £63m investment package to expand access to electric vehicle (EV) charging options.
The funding will be delivered across three sectors, the combined £63m package to drive down charging costs and facilitate the EV transition.
Of the total sum, £25m will be delivered to local authorities to expand home charging through the installation of kerbside chargers.
NHS England will receive £8m to power the electrification of ambulances and medical fleets across over 200 NHS sites which is estimated to save £120m in operational costs.
Additionally, this funding will be spread throughout 211 NHS sites across 62 NHS Trusts across England in the financial year 2025/26, funding over 1,200 chargepoint sockets.

Lastly, £30m in funding will be provided business depot charging to create a grant scheme for logistics fleets (vans, heavy goods vehicles, coaches) to install thousands of chargepoints at depots around the UK.
Speaking from the private business perspective, co-founder and CEO, Aegis Energy, Michael Shaw, said: “We are delighted to see that the government has pledged £30m of investment into helping develop commercial transport charging facilities.
“This funding shows that the government not only supports, but is prioritising fleet transition, with just under half of the £63m in EVs going to commercial transport.
“It is also promising to see the government update signage regulations on motorways and A-roads, allowing larger EV charging hubs to be signposted for the first time.”
“The tide is turning; fleet owners are increasingly championing the long-term financial and environmental benefits of decarbonising commercial transport, and this funding will help them realise those benefits.”
DfT announced that the full grant details and eligibility of which businesses can apply for the depot charging grants will be published Wednesday 16 July.
UK transport secretary Heidi Alexander said: “We know access to charging is a barrier for people thinking of making the switch, and we are tackling that head-on so that everyone – whether or not they have a driveway – can access the benefits of going electric.
“I’m proud that through this boost, we are helping deliver cheaper bills for families, massive savings for the NHS to reinvest in patient care, and thousands of new green jobs.
“We’re not just boosting charging infrastructure, we’re building a fairer, cleaner future where every family can benefit from cheaper, greener transport, whilst creating thousands of good jobs across the country.”
Achievements and innovations in EV charging infrastructure will be recognised and celebrated at the fourth annual CiTTi Awards on 25 November 2025 at De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms in London. Visit www.cittiawards.co.uk to learn more about this unmissable event for the UK’s transportation sector!
