Portsmouth City Council has announced that it is working to expand its on-street electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure.
If approved, Portsmouth stated that this will triple the number of on-street chargepoints in the city, introducing up to 320 new EV chargepoints to be installed in residential areas over 2025.
Starting in March 2025, people living near proposed locations for chargepoints will receive letters to let them know about the plans.
All sites will undergo a 21-day statutory public consultation as part of the Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) process, allowing everyone to share their support or raise objections about proposed locations.
Any objections to chargepoint locations that are received will be included in a report that will go to the cabinet member for transport’s decision meeting during the TRO process.

If approved, letters will be sent to residents to confirm the date the new chargepoints will be installed.
In Portsmouth, more than 3,000 residents currently own plug-in electric or hybrid vehicles, with this number expected to rise to over 38,000 by 2034.
The new chargepoints will be installed through a partnership with the operator Zest, with the EV chargepoint solution provider to identify which chargepoint locations can be transferred into its care and how soon they can take over operation.
Achievements in EV charging infrastructure will be recognised and celebrated at the fourth annual CiTTi Awards on 25 November 2025 at De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms in London. Visit www.cittiawards.co.uk to learn more about this unmissable event for the UK’s transportation sector!
