Jussi Yli-Seppälä, traffic engineer for the urban environment division, City of Helsinki

Name: Jussi Yli-Seppälä

Job role: Traffic Engineer

Organisation: City of Helsinki

What is the best thing about your job?
In my work, I can influence the fact that it is safe for people to move in Helsinki. I can plan measures so that no one is killed or injured in Helsinki’s traffic.

What is the biggest challenge facing those with responsibility for congestion and traffic management in urban environments in 2021?
Due to the pandemic, the popularity of public transport has declined, so the number of private motoring may be increasing.

What’s your best piece of advice for those looking to implement congestion and traffic management solutions?
You have to invest in walking, cycling and public transport attractiveness.

Does legislation help or hinder development in the sector?
Legislation has many implications for transportation planning, both positive and negative.

How will the business of traffic management have changed by 2030?
Climate change will have an even greater impact on transport planning and vehicle technology is likely to have changed significantly. I believe that the attractive living environment in cities and the preference for sustainable traffic will be further emphasised.

Why are you looking forward to speaking at City Transport & Road Pricing Europe 2021?
It will be great to hear the views of professionals about what has been done in Helsinki and what is being done elsewhere.

At the conference you’ll also be able to hear from Continental, Transport & Environment, Greenplan, the cities of Stuttgart and Oslo, the European Green Capital 2021 project… and more!
