The UK government has launched a 23-point action plan aimed at integrating artificial intelligence (AI) across the country’s transport systems to boost sustainability, improve user experience and drive economic growth.
Published by the UK Department for Transport (DfT), the Transport Artificial Intelligence Action Plan sets out how AI will be deployed to optimise traffic flows, enable smarter infrastructure management, improve public transport services and accelerate the decarbonisation of mobility.
According to the plan, AI-enabled transport promises better routing, predictive maintenance, intelligent traffic signals and multimodal integration – technologies that could revolutionise congestion management, air quality and accessibility in UK towns and cities.
Use cases cited include the CitySwift-TfGM Bee Network and Tees Valley’s digital traffic twin, which demonstrate real-time AI-driven optimisation in urban environments.
The plan also supports local authorities with AI adoption for road network management, and commits to trialling autonomous road, air and watercraft under new regulatory frameworks from 2026.
Critically, the UK DfT emphasises responsible, inclusive AI deployment. Public engagement, data ethics and accessibility – especially for disabled passengers – are core considerations, alongside plans to ensure AI systems are safe, transparent and accountable.
The government said the plan marks a “step-change for AI in our transport system”, highlighting its potential to cut emissions, reduce delays and support new industries.
Innovative applications of AI within urban mobility will be recognised and celebrated at the fourth annual CiTTi Awards on 25 November 2025 at De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms in London. Visit www.cittiawards.co.uk to learn more about this unmissable event for the UK’s transportation sector!
