The UK Department for Transport (DfT) has announced a £104m government funding boost, which will be shared with communities outside England’s major cities.
The investment seeks to provide support for local transport improvements that support the government’s Plan for Change, driving growth and access to opportunity.
The funding is part of a £2.3bn government investment to support local transport connections.
Within this larger package, North West authorities are set to receive a £9.3m investment boost to help support transport routes in the area.
Lancashire Combined County Authority will get £7.6m while Cheshire West and Chester Authority will receive £1.7m under the Local Transport Grant.
Reportedly, the councils will use this money to decarbonise transport with purchases such as zero-emission buses, improve accessibility and reduce congestion.
UK transport secretary, Heidi Alexander, said: “Good transport connections are the foundation of thriving communities, which is why we’re backing local authorities to transform journeys for millions of people across England.
“This investment will help councils to improve transport for local people – from cleaner buses to safer cycling routes – connecting communities with jobs, education and essential services.
“By putting resources directly into the hands of local leaders, we’re ensuring every part of the country benefits from better transport links that support economic growth and provide opportunity – all part of our Plan for Change.”
Achievements and innovations in sustainable public transport will be recognised and celebrated at the fourth annual CiTTi Awards on 25 November 2025 at De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms in London. Visit www.cittiawards.co.uk to learn more about this unmissable event for the UK’s transportation sector!
