Third-party logistics company XPO Logistics is set to deploy electric trucks as part of a new agreement making it the core transport partner for PepsiCo – the food and beverage manufacturer behind brands such as Pepsi, 7UP, Doritos and Walkers – in England and Wales.
The partnership will see XPO Logistics operate across all four of PepsiCo’s main UK distribution sites in Leicester, Lutterworth, Coventry and Warrington.
To align with PepsiCo’s decarbonisation strategy and supports its ambition of reaching net zero emissions by 2025, XPO Logistics is set to deploy Mercedes-Benz eActros 600 electric vehicles in PepsiCo’s transport operations.
XPO Logistics expects that this change will result in the conversion of more than 1 million road kilometres annually from diesel to battery electric. This transition, it says, represents a reduction of over 1,200 tonnes of CO₂ emissions per year from PepsiCo’s transport operations.
Set to be operational for PepsiCo from 1 August 2025, these Mercedes-Benz eActros 600 trucks are capable of covering a range of 500km without the need for recharging, and, with the future megawatt charging system, they are able to charge from 20% to 80% in around 30 minutes.
In addition to the deployment of these electric vehicles, XPO Logistics ’ proprietary CO₂ Reporting Dashboard – which it describes as ‘a cutting-edge tool powered by AI-driven scenario modelling, live data analytics and proactive planning insights’ – is set to play a big part in driving down PepsiCo’s road transport emissions in the UK.
Dan Myers, managing director for the UK and Ireland at XPO Logistics, commented: “Sustainability is in our DNA. We are proud to partner with PepsiCo on this journey, combining investment in electric mobility with advanced technology and operational excellence.
“Our shared ambition goes beyond compliance – it’s about transformation. I believe this is just the beginning of what we can achieve together.”
Andrew Smethurst, UK logistics director at PepsiCo, added: “XPO Logistics has shown itself to be the ideal partner to help advance our PepsiCo Positive ambition.
“From their industry-leading sustainability credentials to a strong safety culture and transparent operational model, their team has consistently delivered innovation and value.
“This new partnership will play a vital role in further reducing our logistics emissions as we move iconic products like Walkers crisps and Doritos to our customers across the UK.”
Achievements and innovations in urban logistics will be recognised and celebrated at the fourth annual CiTTi Awards on 25 November 2025 at De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms in London. Visit www.cittiawards.co.uk to learn more about this unmissable event for the UK’s transportation sector!
