As part of the speech by UK chancellor of the exchequer Rachel Reeves announcing the Spending Review, Reeves outlined funding for the Midlands Rail Hub.
The exact amount hasn’t yet been revealed, but the Midlands Rail Hub is a £1.75bn blueprint for faster, better and more frequent connections across the region.
The scheme will reportedly add up to 300 additional trains and 20 million extra seats on the rail network per day into or out of Birmingham.
It will also provide more frequent or new rail links for over 50 locations including: Nottingham, Leicester, Bromsgrove, Nuneaton, Worcester, Hereford and Cardiff and creating nearly 13,000 construction jobs.
Additionally, the Midlands Rail Hub project is co-sponsored by Midlands Connect, the Department for Transport and West Midlands Rail Executive.
Mayor of the West Midlands Richard Parker said: “The Midlands Rail Hub is about more than trains – it’s about opportunity.
“This investment will unlock thousands of jobs, support new homes and connect our region to faster, greener growth.
“It’s a major step forward for national connectivity and local prosperity, and a clear signal that the Midlands is at the heart of Britain’s future.”
Achievements in rail will be recognised and celebrated at the fourth annual CiTTi Awards on 25 November 2025 at De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms in London. Visit www.cittiawards.co.uk to learn more about this unmissable event for the UK’s transportation sector!
