The Midlands Rail Hub has selected four delivery partners, advancing the potential £1.75bn rail overhaul project.
The Midlands Rail Hub is set to overhaul the railway in Birmingham and the West Midlands, including how train services run to New Street, Moor Street and Snow Hill.
The project aims to transform passenger journeys locally, regionally, and nationally, better connecting people with opportunities, jobs and new houses.
Changes will include connecting the Chiltern main line, which runs into Moor Street, with Camp Hill lines that run towards the South and East Midlands.
The alliance partners include VolkerRail, Laing O’Rourke, AtkinsRéalis and Siemens Mobility, alongside Network Rail, to design and develop plans to transform the region’s railway infrastructure.

In 2024, the government injected £123m to design and develop major changes to the railway through Birmingham, and a recent spending review committed to continuing progress for the Midlands Rail Hub.
This will include planning for smaller upgrades to benefit passengers.
The project aims to run more train services on key routes through Birmingham to improve connections for millions of people using the railway network.
Chief operating officer at Resonate Group, Blake Richmond, said: “The Midlands is an important hub for the UK as a leading region for industry, manufacturing, tech and financial services, requiring first-class transport infrastructure.
“The advancement of the Midlands Rail Hub will have a significant impact on millions of people and businesses, increasing the frequency of trains, reducing delays and greatly improving the accessibility of key locations.”
“Technology should play a central role in delivering the project successfully.
“With data-driven tech, rail operators can gain real-time control across routes to help signallers and planners respond to changes on the network quickly, help scenario plan by forecasting train movement, and improve disruption management.
“This supports operators in control of the network, while greatly improving customer journeys with more reliable trains that come more frequently.”
Achievements and innovations in rail will be recognised and celebrated at the fourth annual CiTTi Awards on 25 November 2025 at De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms in London. Visit www.cittiawards.co.uk to learn more about this unmissable event for the UK’s transportation sector!
